I had everything a woman could want… My husband, James. The house on the lake. My life. Our perfect life. And then Alex came to visit. The first time I saw my husband’s best friend, I didn’t like him. Didn’t like how James changed when he was around, didn’t like how his penetrating eyes followed me everywhere. But that didn’t stop me from wanting him. And, surprisingly, James didn’t seem to mind. It was meant to be fun. Something the three of us shared for those hot summer weeks Alex stayed with us. Nobody was supposed to fall in or out of love. I didn’t need another man, not even one who oozed sex like honey and knew all the secrets I didn’t know, the secrets my husband hadn’t shared. After all, we had a perfect life. And I loved my husband. But I wasn’t the only one.
Want a chance to win it? Comment and answer the question below. I’ll draw a winner tomorrow morning. One entry per person, please.
What movie or book really scared you for a long time?
My answer: The Shining and it was the book, not the movie. I read it when I was probably a bit too young for it and it freaked me out for months. Amityville Horror (the book version) gets the runner up place.
(well, right now–the political news is pretty darned scary)…..the scariest movie i’ve ever watched was Dawn of the Dead .
by JACKIE YOUNG September 26th, 2008 at 2:49 amOMG! My brother rented American Werewolf in London. I had nightmares for 2 YEARS. To this day I can’t watch horror movies! Oh, I was 6 when I watched it with him.
by Natasha Armstrong September 26th, 2008 at 3:59 amNatasha Armstrong
The scariest move I saw was Poltergist. I was 12 or 13 when it came out and my parents reluctantly let me see because it was PG. To this day I can’t watch horror movies or even funny horror movies.
by Greta September 26th, 2008 at 4:19 amThe movie that still scares the hibby jibbys out of me is Pet Cemetary. This movie just messes with my head for some reason
by Heidi September 26th, 2008 at 4:52 amThe Exorcist really scared me. I had nightmares for days after watching it.
by CrystalGB September 26th, 2008 at 4:56 amThe 1st ‘Jason’ movie when I was a kid. I watched it at my friends who lived across the street I remember calling my Dad so he would turn the porch light on then running from her house across the street to mine. I’m so glad there were no cars coming b/c I never paused much less stopped to look. Straight Shot!
Thank you,
by Susan Bussey September 26th, 2008 at 5:04 amSusan B.
I think first place goes to the movie “The Changeling” starring George C. Scott. I could not sleep that night after we watched it! I think runner up is Stephen King’s Pet Cemetary, the book, I had a very hard time letting my cat sleep with me for awhile after that! lol!
Thank you for the contest!
by shaunesay September 26th, 2008 at 5:08 amThe scariest movie I ever watched was Candy Man. I had to take down all the mirrors in the house for a while.
by sara hurt September 26th, 2008 at 5:21 am“The Amityville Horror”
OMG! I love Megan and I hope I win her book!!!
by Mel K. September 26th, 2008 at 6:05 amTo be honest, I haven’t been scared by a film or book, as far as I can remember. But I don’t watch many films, and I’m very aware that I’m reading a book when I’m reading a book?
But the “Jeffersons” episode of South Park worried me the first time I saw it. And it was still disturbing the second time around.
Have a lovely day! 🙂
by Tez Miller September 26th, 2008 at 7:03 amI’m no friend of horror movies, but one scary I’ve seen was “The Ring”. And all Stephen King’s books are rather scary.
by Eva S September 26th, 2008 at 7:15 amWatching Fright Night II when I was a kid really freaked me out, I was like 8 or 9, but I had nightmares after that movie. And then when I saw the movie again as an adult, it was still pretty scary, but probably made more so by its connection to the nightmares I had after watching it as a child.
by Preye September 26th, 2008 at 7:34 amWhen I was young, I would camp out in the living room when a Canadian station played older, scary movies on television. I do agree with all of the previous answers-The Shining, Pet Semetary, The Ring, but the black and white version of “The Haunting” really freaked me out. One scene in particular got to me-the woman is asleep and has her hand hanging over the bed. She wakes up and tells her friend in the next bed to stop squeezing her hand so hard. Her friend answers-“I’m not holding your hand..” and proves it to her by holding both hands up. Yet, her hand continues to be squeezed harder and harder…How many times do you wake up with your arm hanging off of the bed, or your toes uncovered? Since that movie, I try to keep my entire body covered and on the bed, so no unnaturals try to grab me!
by Jen September 26th, 2008 at 7:43 amFreddy Cougar movies. The fear of those lingered in my teens and adult years. I still won’t watch them even knowing that my favorite musican (Alice Cooper) played in one. My hubs LOVES them.
Another that p layed with my head and freaked me for so long was Blair Witch movie. I have a highly susceptible mind
by Raonaid September 26th, 2008 at 8:12 amSilence of the Lambs is pretty freaky though anything that is psychological will freak me out more than the gore movies do. Same with books. I love psychological thrillers because they can be scary.
by Larena Wirum September 26th, 2008 at 8:32 amI avoid horror–movies and books. I just don’t enjoy being scared for the sake of being scared.
Suspense? Gimme! Horror? ugh.
The last movie I watched that had me on the edge of my seat, and looking at dark corners for weeks was Silence of the Lambs. After that I got Manhunter (the original movie for the novel Red Dragon, with William Petersen) but somehow it lacked the punch of Silence of the Lambs.
by azteclady September 26th, 2008 at 8:40 amIt was years ago, obviously, but “The Exorcist” scared the heck out of me. I remember my friends laughing about the movie, but I would shiver just thinking about it. Must be that Catholic guilt thing. 🙂
by Gail Siuba September 26th, 2008 at 8:43 amWe lived in some haunted locations when I was growing up so Poltergeist was the movie that scared me. I was always worried the ghosts would turn violent like that. Thankfully that never happened.
by LadyVampire2u September 26th, 2008 at 8:55 amIt, based of of the Stephen King novel. I saw it really young, and for the longest time I was terrorfied all off different types of plumbing. I wouldn’t flush toilets, and I had to take a shower with the door open, so I could escape. *shudders* Still, when I’m tired and my defenses are down, I avoid flushing toilets until the morning.
by JC September 26th, 2008 at 9:18 amI am not a big fan of horror flicks, but one that scared me as a kid was one of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I had nightmares and kept seeing his ugly mug,… I snuck into my parents room and slept under their bed!
by Colleen September 26th, 2008 at 9:43 amThe Exorcist scared the bejeebers out of me. To this day I still can’t watch it.
by Jody F. September 26th, 2008 at 9:49 amI am not sure that I have ever read or watch anything that truly scared me for a long time. The closest I can think of is watching movies that could become real(i.e. day after tomm. & such) I do scare, I guess that I just do not stay scared for very long.
by Dianna F September 26th, 2008 at 10:01 amThe original King Kong. I saw it when I was five and was sure there was a gorilla outside peering in my window every night when I went to bed.
by DonnaB September 26th, 2008 at 10:22 amThe movie that still scares me to this day is Resident Evil. It is just the first one that scares me. I can watch the other two over and over again and not get nightmares. There is just something about the first one. Unfortuantely it is my favorite movie, so still have to pop it in and get myself a good scared.
by Rebekah E. September 26th, 2008 at 10:59 amScariest has to be Invasion of the Body Snatchers, probably because I was so young when I saw it.
by Shirley September 26th, 2008 at 11:25 amI’ve seen the Exorcist many times and it still scares the crap out of me to this day. Especially the part where her head rotates and she vomits all over!
by Teresa W. September 26th, 2008 at 11:44 amTeresa, I totally agree with you, that whole spinning head,, vomit and that scary voice…ewww! Just as I posted earlier, this movie creeped me out-I read the book first, and I think my brain must have protected me-seeing the film and the actors in it give it life, really did scare me. 😮
by Gail Siuba September 26th, 2008 at 11:48 amMine was also the Shining – I watched it as a teen and it scared me so much my parents found me sleeping sitting up in the corner of the couch the next morning – I couldn’t walk down the hall for weeks without the lights on.
by Lynn S September 26th, 2008 at 12:17 pmHalloween…all of them…something about the butcher knife being the weapon and his slow movements but he is always there…where he needs to be…
I avoid the butcher knife if I can and always ask my hubby WHY he must use that damn thing to cut a sandwich in half?? Of all the knives, he always picks that one!! And I am the one who has to wash it!!
by AmyC September 26th, 2008 at 12:29 pmzomg I this book!!! Anyway – what scared me? Pretty much everything. I don’t like scary movies. I saw the original (Cantonese) version of “The Eyes” – and it freaked me out for a bit, especially on elevators. I’ve never seen the ring – some of Brenda Joyce’s books actually have disturbing things – ghosts, haunted houses, etc.
by limecello September 26th, 2008 at 12:36 pmAfter my friends made me watch “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” I forced myself to stay up past 3 am for 2-3 weeks… but I think the scariest thing I’ve seen was something I saw in first grade. No idea what it was – I was at a friend’s house after school – pretty much being babysat – and her mom was watching this movie/miniseries. It was a Cantonese horror- where there were vampires who were blue and white and they came through walls and in order to “repel” them people had to bathe with snakes. I of course don’t have all the details down, but… suffice it to say I was highly disturbed and couldn’t sleep with my closet doors open for like the next 10 years.
the exorcist.
couldn’t sleep all summer! still won’t eat green peas.
by becky September 26th, 2008 at 12:41 pmThe scariest movie I’ve ever seen was “Hellraiser.” Pinhead used to give me nightmares.
by Jane September 26th, 2008 at 1:01 pmThat is most definitely The Exorcist. I saw part of it when I was younger and I can’t stand to even see a commercial for it now. Gives me the total creeps!!!! 😮
by Michelle B. September 26th, 2008 at 4:15 pmThe Excorcist takes the cake. Im not a big fan of horror movies. But if I had to choose one, then this would be it.
by I heart Books September 26th, 2008 at 4:36 pmWhen I was little I saw a movie called War Of the Worlds and those alien machines with their wierd ‘eye’ appearance, scared the bejujus outta me. I was under the table scared that the aliens would come and get me, but I kept watching the movie.
by Mary Kirkland September 26th, 2008 at 6:33 pmStephen King’s It
by Lyda September 26th, 2008 at 6:36 pmAs a kid that was the first horror movie I ever saw. Scarred me for EVER. lol
It is Stephen King’s It for me, too. I was afraid to go the bathroom for a long time. My mother had to stand by in front of the bathroom.
by May B. September 26th, 2008 at 7:18 pmThe Shining. I saw it in the theatre as a teen and I have to say it may have colored my perception of Jack Nicholson forever. He creeps me out.
by Sue A. September 26th, 2008 at 7:21 pmI try to avoid books and especially movies that are too scary, but I do remember being scared by Jaws for a long time. There are some old Alfred Hitchcock films that have freaked me out, too, in particular Psycho. I’ve avoided Stephen King since reading Carrie many years ago. I’m just a wimp–LOL.
by Cynthya September 26th, 2008 at 10:07 pmI’m with you on Amityville Horror, also The Stand by Stephen King. I read it when I was 13 and couldn’t go to sleep on several nights reading through the night hoping to get to a part that didn’t scare me as much.
