Book of the Day: Witch Heart, by Anya Bast

witch-heart

With the immense powers of an earth witch, Claire isn’t destined to be a demon’s handmaiden. Yet this has been her fate since she was six, when her warlock mother brought her to Eudae. Now as an adult, she’s about to discover her true power—and how far others are willing to go to take it away…

As part of a mission with the Coven, Adam Tyrell rescues Claire from her enslavement—and finds himself immediately taken with the beautiful witch. But this charming playboy soon learns that it’s easier to steal Claire from demons than win her heart, for her life as a servant has ravaged her spirit. But with Adam determined to protect her from the warlocks who want to harness her magick for evil, Claire’s resistance starts to give way—and they find themselves in the heat of danger, surrendering to the lure of their deepest desires…

Okay, this is my book so no interview. Answer the question in the comments for a shot at winning the book. This contest (as are all my contests) is open to non-US readers.

Did you have a nick name as a child? If you didn’t, did you always wish for one? If you had one, was it a traumatic experience for you? *g*

  1. No nickname for me ever really stuck as a child. At various camping events, people tried to give me food-related nicknames like Cookie and Apple, but no one ever really remembered or used them. I had the most common name in my grade throughout elementary school, so I wanted a nickname to differentiate myself.

  3. I have a very rare and unusual name, so there was never a need for a nickname. I did have one in college – franulovic, but it didn’t stick; only my sister calls that nowadays

  5. No nickname that everyone used, but one kid in school called me the galloping goose, and at work I was called Danno constantly.

  6. I didn’t have a nickname either, and never really thought about having one. My name is kind of old fashioned, so everyone always knows who they were talking about when using my name. Neither can it be shortened into another form of my name. I guess my name is a lot like me, it is what it is 🙂

  7. I’ve never had a nickname!

  8. This is probably the EASIEST question EVER for ME!

My maiden name was: Jessica Unkle
    Yup, U-N-K-L-E.

    My nickname?

Uncle Jessie, as in Full House.

I HATED it! I only allowed one person to really call me that. Everyone else I told the to basically STFU.

Unkle is a rather odd last name and then with Jessica as my first name and Full House was hip at the time, so it all just feel into place!

I’ve already read Witch Heart and LOVED it! I still wouldn’t mind a copy though! 🙂

    <3 Anya!

  9. my nickname was rather weird yet not as tramatic as the story of where my name came from most just called me bags sinc emy first middle and last name spelled bag heres the story on where my name came from my mom had me but went to sleep which in a way its a good thing since she wanted to name me peach blossom but instead my dad named me after his ex girlfriend ppl still mess with me on itlol my better half tho now calls me peaches because of what my mom was gonna name me or just hippy lol ur books r so good i barroed this from the libarary and id love to win it so i can read it a couple of times lol

  10. I always wanted a nickname, or at least a version of my name. But had nothing. Well one kind, there was a another girl in my class with the same name. I was one of the tallest, she one of the smallest. I was big L, she was little L.
Honestly now when i think about it i don’t like it. Like I was huge or something

  11. My dad called me peanut for as long as I can remember and still did it occasionally when I was grown lol. He tried Lulu but even as a child I was very stubborn and refused to answer to that one. My sis’s dad used to call her rooster titty. He was such an ahole though.

  12. Not as a child, but soon after my DH and I started dating, he would call me Spunky or Lil’ Jo. Spunky because I was kind of spastic and Lil’ Jo because my middle name is Joanne.

  13. I don’t have a nickname when I was young but in the office, I was once called “Don” because I was the oldest in the department! No trauma though ‘cos its all in good fun. Tamsyn

  14. I have had 2 nicknames given by family and only used by family —

    my dad calls me midget/midge
    my sister calls me Marco

  15. As a young child my family used the nickname, ‘pumpkin’ for me…not sure why, but it definitely was used by everyone in the relation. As I grew up they stopped using it and just used my real name which at the time was different enough from all the other kids around.
At my first job I belonged to our company’s bowling team and was called ‘half pint’ and the team was then named ‘Four Quarts and a Half Pint’. The name was rather obvious as I was the shortest one on the team by quite a few inches. I don’t think I ever lived that name down and I still see some of these people and get reminded of it.

  16. No nickname for me. I am glad I didn’t have one.

  17. I don’t know where it came from, but my mom’s side of the family called me Granola. It never bothered me, but I have no idea why they called me that. Maybe I loved eating granola when I was little???

  18. I didn’t, except a few that I didn’t care for (who wants to be called “Fifi”?) I always wanted a name that lent itself to cute nicknames that one could sign with a heart over the “i”–not in the cards!

  19. Anya, your simply the best…Really lookin’ forward to this one. 🙂

My name is Rachael, but I hardly ever hear it. Everyone..from my family to my friends and even my co-workers call me Rachie. It’s always a little weird when I hear someone refer to me as Rachael..it’s like, who me??

  20. Yes, I had a nickname growing up. It was Bertie instead of calling me Roberta. I hated it. The thing is I still have family members who call me Bertie. I had everybody start using my first name Roberta when I was about 13. It has been over 20 years people. Stop calling me Bertie. I guess you can tell I don’t like my nickname. LOL Have a great day.

  21. My grandma and dad called me Sassy when I was really young. Occasionally, they still use it (I’m 21) and it’s embarrassing.

  22. Mine was puddin. My family still calls me this. In high school some of the kids I knew called me that too. Bothered me at first but then I got used to it.

  23. No nickname for me, and I don’t think I ever wished for one either…

  24. One used as an insult in school – anna banana. Thankfully it never stuck.

  25. If I did, it wasn’t a nice one. So I have deliberately blocked it from memory to minimize further trauma 🙂 Thanks go out to my siblings!

  26. My nick name is pompom, where it came from I don’t know.

  27. My nick name is pompom, where it came from I don’t know.

  28. Yes and 1 was ok but the other one I hated…both were given to me by my Dad! I swam competitively so the first nickname he had for me was water -baby and that is what he always called me! The second one, the one I hated was Pelican. He called me that because I was never able to finish an entire meal when we would eat. He would say and I quote “my little pelican, her bill could hold more than her belly can” I have no clue where that came from but that’s what he called me!

  30. My grandfather used to call me butchy bologna butt when I was younger. How did he come up with this you say. I used to love to watch the little rascals when I was younger and loved my grandma’s homemade bologna that she made. So when I would run around with my butt hanging out he called me that one day and it stuck!

  32. LOL, my dad would call me Meanlissa….didn’t bother me, though, because I was!!

  33. LOL, my dad would call me Meanlissa….didn’t bother me, though, because I was!!

  34. My name is Danielle and when I was younger I got called Danni. I hated it then but now I actually like it and use it all the time.

  35. My name is Danielle and when I was younger I got called Danni. I hated it then but now I actually like it and use it all the time.

  36. My mom called me Buckethead. When I was little and she was trying to potty train me, I’d take the little bucket and put it on my head (sans toilet contents). So the nickname stuck, unfortunately lol.

  38. my nick names were pammy and pam-pam, and as teenagers my girl friends and i had nic names for each other we made using a consonant in our name and then the letter e – i.e. Rachel was re-re, Heidi was de-de, Janean ne-ne, and I was me-me (no not pe-pe :P). only nick name I didn’t ever care for was spam a few boys called me in daycare lol.

  39. I had a few… my uncle called me Denise as in The Niece. My friend called me Colls, and my dad called me McFly, which I hated with a passion.

  40. This makes me think of my daddy. He passed in ’06. He had two cute nicknames for me. My mom has one for me and so does my sister. Years ago my friends gave me an interesting and ironic nickname. My nickname now is, Mel.

  42. Ohh..great prize 😉
I’ve never had a nickname growing up, even though I secretly thought it was very cool to have one! I really enjoyed reading the stories of those of you who did have funny nicknames 🙂

  44. I still go by my nickname. My full name is Jaclynne, but I’ve always gone by Jac or Jackie. I’m not really sure why, but I’ve always gone by those two. For some reason, Jaclynne only came out when I was in trouble.

  46. My family (parents and extended family) have a nickname for me. My sister has another one. I had one in university–glad it didn’t stick!

  49. I never had a nickname, but I thought it would have been cool to have one.

  50. I did not have a nickname, my father HATED nicknames and because of that we were not allowed to have or use them. It made things interesting since my sisters and I are all D names…Dianna, Dana, Davia & Donna
Now I do have a couple of nicknames, I am called Trouble on the CB and my boss calls me Princess. LOL I am a little spoiled at work.

  52. My dad used to call me Shannonannon. I always thought nicknames were a shortened version of the real thing, but whatever. I love it.

  53. My dad used to call me Shannonannon. I always thought nicknames were a shortened version of the real thing, but whatever. I love it.

  54. My relatives from my mother’s side always called me Maikki – and actually they still do. I can see that someone might have thought it was a cute nickname that is remotely same as my original name, but even now when I hear it, I always notice the nickname and think “oh, that one… I really know I’m visiting relatives” (we don’t see each other’s that often because of the long distance).

    traumatic experience for you?

  55. Nope, I did not have a nickname. I never thought about it!

  56. I was called Strawberry shortcake because i’m short, Red because i have red hair witch i did not mind this one and ity bity which i could not stand and you know why

  57. oh i forgot my uncle calls me pumkin to this day and that is my fav. i wonder why i forgot it lol

  58. I didn’t have one as a child and totally wanted one but eventually, I grew out of it. And then unfortunately, I got one in high school. Cleopatra Queen of the Nile. I was on a camping trip with some relatives and refused to get out of the canoe into a low water-leveled quasi-marsh-like area where there were leeches and so I got towed along in the canoe. Then in university, I sometimes got called Pocahontas or Yoko Ono ’cause I had long straight hair. None of it was traumatic but I could’ve done without them.

  59. I never had a nickname and never thought about having one.

  60. Oh yeah I had several nicknames as a kid.
First was Rapunzel, becuase my hair has always been long and i wore it in a braid for a long time.

Then when I was in school I had a teacher that started calling me Cap’n Kirk (Star Trek). Because my last name is Kirkland. Good thing I liked the show because that nick name stuck with me for 6 years of school.

  61. No nicknames as a kid. There were times when I wanted one, but at least I was saved from nickname related childhood traumas.

  62. My nickname growing up was Raven. My 3rd grade teacher gave it to me and it stuck through most of my school years. She said it was because my hair was so black. There was more than one Lori in the class any way, and the nickname helped us from getting confused when she called on us.

My brother called me a less flattering nickname – Goat. I hated it. Thankfully he was the only one who ever called me by that. He did it just to irritate me.

  63. Hi Anya!

Thank you so much for the chance to win “Witch Heart”.

No, I never had a nic name as a child. However, my parents called me by my full names which is hyphenated and drove me crazy. Needless to say, as soon as I was old enough I shortened it to my current name. lol

I hope you are having fun at the RT Convention.

    Best Regards 😀

  64. I always wanted a nickname, but never had one, at least as a child. In more recent years I’ve occasionally become “buuuddy?!” which means somebody needs help with algebra. Definitely a traumatizing experience. 😮

  65. My dad’s nick name for me was burr head. He went and had a Little Orphan Annie perm put in my hair and then kept referring me to a burr that would get stuck on his socks. I hated it and still to this day hate when my perms get just a little too “frizzy”.

  66. Hi Anya! Yes I did have a nickname as a child and it was Bitsy. You know, I don’t really remember where that came from and no one calls me that now. I have to say that I can’t ever remember it bothering me.

  67. My nickname was Peanut as a child…still don’t know how that came about. It then changed to Babydoll but the only one who still uses it is my father.

  68. The kids in my neighborhood called me “chicken legs” cuz I was skinny then *sigh* Around the time that Princess Diana became a Princess (so long ago, now!) I was sometimes called “Lady Di’.

  69. I didn’t have any nicknames as a kid and it never really bothered me at all.

  70. My first name is Marjana so people use to call me Marijuana, instead of MAR-JA-NA(thats how you say my name). At first, it used to bother me but then I just got over it 😉

  71. No I never had a nick name but always wanted one because Jamie was a little plain.

  72. I had a nickname as a child. Since my name is Sue, my parents nicknamed me Sweetie. However, one night my dad got drunk and he kept on calling me “Tweetie” instead. After a while, the nickname stuck.

  73. At 5’10 by the time I was in grade school, I got tagged with bean pole, which naturally got shortened to beanie!!! No trama, it’s was all good fun…

  74. I’ve had a few, Goober was one of them. The worse was Pork Chop, the reasoning behind that was because (this is embarassing) I step on a pork chop bone and had to get stitches in my foot.

  75. Yes one my sister and brother used to call me because I was a lot shorter than either ov them; but it was for fun and they don’t use nowadays
Have the book already and read it, loved it. Enjoy yourself.

  76. I didn’t have a nickname, but I guess I must have wanted one because I gave one to myself when I was a young teen. 🙂

  77. Yep, I had a nickname at home and one at school while we were stationed in Big Spring Texas.
Home nickname was Victor Vicious the Mad Vitamin Stealer…..not overly scarred for life…

Big Spring Texas nickname was Icky Vickie….yeah, no need for therapy at any time…..self therapied…..
    = )

  78. Did you have a nick name as a child? If you didn’t, did you always wish for one? If you had one, was it a traumatic experience for you? *g*

  79. I did have a nick name and I hated it. I was the youngest and they picked on me and so I cried. They called Deb-boo-hoo.

  80. Oops! Hit the return key:roll:

Did you have a nick name as a child? yes my nickname was Beegee because that’s how I said my name when I first started talking. To this day my family and friends still call me that.

  81. My nickname when I was a kid was Annie because my middle name is Ann. In high school my nickname was Red because I had red hair. Nothing traumatic, just wish I had cooler nicknames. 😉

  82. No nick names really, got derogitory names like Smelly Shelley quite a bit from a cousin but nothing that really stuck. In college one of the guys called me Shpankie….. not quite sure where that was from but it didn’t bother me.

  83. My mom and sister calls me Aim or Amos. Sometimes Famous Amos. I really don’t like those nicknames. Aim isn’t as bad as Amos though. lol

  84. None really took hold for me, but I would have liked a cool one. All 3 of my kids got theirs in utero!

  85. I had a gym teacher who used to call me Katy-did; that was my favorite.

Then My aunt invented a couple names for me: Nickabod (don’t ask me what it means b/c I don’t know!) and KT (since I once mentioned that people call me KaDy even though it’s spelled KaTy).

These days, most people call me Kate, but I answer to “hey, you” too 😀

  86. My nickneme was tiner beaner (it’s supposed to rhyme) because I loved green beans…

It wasn’t traumatic though. I loved green beans!

  87. Oh, I forgot one. In high school I was nicknamed by the upperclassmen as Jugs b/c… well, you can guess. I used to just roll my eyes when I heard it and give the boys my best I-am-not-amused look. None of the guys in my grade had the nerve to call me that in my hearing – they knew me. The name died out as the immature juniors and seniors graduated. 😆

  88. My childhood nickname was “Chopsticks”, I was a skinny kid. It bothered me enough back then that I wouldn’t wear shorts. 🙁

  89. No, I did not have a nickname as a child nor did I wish I had.

  90. Psh, my name was already so strange that really all anyone did was shorten it. I went from Cinnamon to Cinn (pronounced Sin) and usually people mispronounced my maiden name so I was either Sin, or Demon. Lovely!

  91. I wasn’t called by my nicknames for very long. One was Fred. My Dad had an older brother named Fred that died just before he was born. If I had been a boy, I would have been named after him. When I was 8 my younger sister was born and she was then called by Fred. Still is sometimes.

My Great aunt and uncle called me Papagei. That’s German for parrot. My first words were in German and anything they said, i repeated back. Then my parents banned all relatives from speaking any German with me. They were worried I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between English and German.

  92. Wow. I don’t even think I know how to spell it but I’ll give it a try… Froneekinks. My Grandpa gaves us all weird names but they stuck.

  93. No I didn’t have a nickname just numerous names, apparently the whole family got to name me, so while only three or four actual names were placed on the birth certificate, all my other names were written down for me and I grew up knowing I had a whole bunch of names (appx. 10) and that if a family member called one of those names they were calling me! It got confusing for my friends whenever I had them over and they saw my dad calling me one thing, my mom and grandmother calling me another, my grandfather calling me one thing, etc. It was alway funny to me, not a big deal until I moved to the US and I realized not many people had that many names, guess my family is just unique!

  94. I’ve had many: Rach, rachet, Rachie.

Then in high school, because I had my brother’s biker jacket on, I was called chains. Then most of my junior and senior I was known as blonde bimbo (only to friends, it was a joke that I kept on)

  95. Nickname: Love. I was always called Love when I was a child. No, it was not traumatic. What was a shock was when I started school and everybody called me Cherry and I have to ask my mother why my teachers and schoolmates are calling me Cherry. Nobody ever calls me Cherry at home. Still don’t. That was when my mother explained to me my full name. Bloody hell!

  96. Never had a nickname and neither did my brother. My cousin was called Nikki Noodle and that fascinated both of us.

  97. my closest friends called me teena weena… but that’s not too harsh… didn’t bother me in the least 😉

  98. I don’t remember having a nickname as a child but I do now.

My neice and nephew call me aunt Feather instead of aunt Heather.

I love it. My mom is banana instead of nana.

    Heather

  99. As a child I had two nicknames. Necie and Butterball. I hated Butterball, but my loved ones today still call me Nece and Necie. lol

  100. my childhood nickname is flip. My siblings still call me flip

  101. I didn’t have any nicknames growing up, but my twin sister did. And yeah I was jealous and wished I had one too 😆

  102. Jeanie Beanie and I hated it

  103. Satch was the nickname that my older brother gave me and I HATED it. Then there was the family(extended) name of “Kimmie.” Bothers me when I see the few family members that still call me it!

  104. The only nickname I had as a child was the one my grandfather gave me – Ostrich. It wasn’t really traumatizing, especially since it helped me choose a topic for a research project in fourth grade.

  105. Not really. However, I still have some great aunts who called me “curb sitter” forever. When I was really little, we lived in a small town where both sides of my family lived and I would sit on the curb on our street…which was main street…and watch the cars go by. Most likely, I was watching to see my Grandma go by, but to this day they still bring up the whole “curb sitter” thing when they see me.

  106. My nickname as a child was Ashtray. Not because I smoked or anything though. I don’t really know why it was given to me except that with my name being Ashley it was the most creative thing my friends could come up with.
