Am I the only person who thinks this is the coolest thing ever?
Avenging Unicorn Play Set
Everyone wants an imaginary unicorn friend that they can call forth to smite their enemies. The Avenging Unicorn Play Set has everything you need to use the power of the unicorn to rid your life of irritations.
Or do I just have a really sick sense of humor? (Could be that.)
This company also has the Avenging Narwhal Play Set and a whole collection of rubber Devil Duckies. I think the Ninja Devil Duckie is my favorite.
So I started thinking about what my favorite toys were when I was kid. Not that I think the Avenging Unicorn Playset is for kids. My mind just spins off on various tangents that way.
I was a typical girl, I guess. I loved Barbie. (I know! I know! The shame.) I had all the Barbie stuff. The Dream Car (it was perfect for my hamsters and guinea pigs to take joy rides in) and the Dream House. I had all the really, really pink dream stuff that I hope my daughter won’t ever like but, let’s face it, she probably will.
I loved my cabbage patch dolls too. I had a boy and girl. In fact, I still have my two worse-for-wear Cabbage Patch Kids. I also had a Cabbage Patch pet. I guess it was supposed to be a cat, but looked disconcertingly evuuul.
I loved that green ooozy glop that comes in a can and Playdough too. And I read…a lot. (Hold on, here’s another tangent. Wheee!) I could go on and on about children’s books. Actually, I’ve been collecting some of the books that are still print that I can remember loving as a child, like the Serendipity books and the Francis books (Bedtime for Francis, A Baby Sister for Francis), and the Teddy Bear’s Picnic. Not to mention all the young adult books I loved, books by Lloyd Alexander and Madeleine L’Engle, just to name two authors.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane. What were some of your favorite toys and books as a child?
I. Want. That. Devil. Duck. That is one of the coolest damn things i’ve ever seen! And that unicorn cracks me up. About childhood toys – we no longer call it Ebay in our family, it’s officially called Scott-bay. My husband has been buying up all the toys he had when he was a kid for his “Remember When” museum. I think half the store room is now his junk – i mean precious stuff. I even designed Scott-bay gift certificates for his birthday, christmas and probably all future gift giving.
I still have the doll i got in Germany when i was three or four. Her name is Pigtail (cuz her hair is in pigtails, duh) and she’s about 3 feet tall. Unfortunately she sits on a shelf in my closet and has for the past 20 years because she totally freaks my kids out. You would think at 21 and 13 they would be over it all ready, but noooooooo – i still have to keep Pigtail in the closet because they think she’s possessed. Weird kids.
Books – i loved Mary Stewart’s “Crystal Cave” and of course all the Nancy Drew books. I laid my hands on my first Stephen King novel when i was thirteen, so i guess that counts as kid love too.
by Rhian January 25th, 2007 at 12:15 amHe-Man and GI Joe. I LOVED those figures. I had a unicorn with weird red eyes, too (which might explain my fascination with glowing red eyes now). Barbie.
Do unicorns pretty much define the 80s? I think they must.
Books — oh, wow. Too many, but I think my favorites were Trixie Belden, anything by Nancy Garden (I blame her for my vampire/werewolf fascination), and anything with a horse or a dog.
by Meljean Brook January 25th, 2007 at 1:57 amOMG! I remember Trixie Belden now! I remember thinking she was way cooler than Nancy Drew who had her total dingbat moments, where she was too dependent on her sidekick – what’s his face.
by Rhian January 25th, 2007 at 2:04 amThanks for bringing forth a lost memory Meljean!
Rhian — I want that devil duck too! I really want the Avenging Unicorn Playset. I don’t why, but that thing totally cracks me up.
Regarding scary dolls…my grandmother made me a doll when I was a child that looked incredibly evil. I had to hide in the closet. It was pity, you know, since my grandmother made it for me, but children’s fears know no bounds.
Mejean — GOD, I forgot about G.I. Joe. I loved those action figures too.
by anyabastblog January 25th, 2007 at 4:27 pmI want the devil duck, too. LOL to some online folks, I’m known as Ducky. Too funny.
I was a stuffed animal fanatic. I played with them a lot, having little adventures. Had an evil monkey named Junior. Got a kitchen set when I was three or four that I played with constantly. They were metal not plastic.
Books, too many to name. Trixie Belden, The Black Stallion series, The Island Stallion, Misty, Big Red, The Three Investigators series, The secret of Van Rink’s Cellar, The house of Thirty Cats. I could go on and on. I don’t remember how old I was when I discovered Stephen King, but he, Alistair MacClean, Robert Ludlum, Kathleen Woodiwiss, and Harelequin dominated my pre-teen and teen years.
